How to Find Freelance Work and Funding

How to Find Freelance Work and FundingHow to Find Freelance Work and FundingRaises arent what they used to be, and neither is job security. For these reasons, some workers turn to freelance work. If youre looking to supplement your income, or test the waters for a whole new career, freelancing might be the answer. Heres how to find the best freelance jobs for your skills, needs, and experience. Also, review tips on how to find funding if you want to start freelancing. 4 Tips for Finding Freelance Work NetworkingAt least 60 percent of all jobs are found through networking. Freelance gigs are particularly well-suited for this job search method because employers are more willing to give you a chance if you come recommended by someone they already know and trust. How do you get started networking? The good news is that youre probably doing it already. If you socialize with present or former colleagues or anyone in your industry, youre making and forging connections that will help you find work, freelance or otherwise. Your goal now is to keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities. Social MediaSocial media is the would-be freelancers best friend. Your favorite social network can be your personal website, free advertising, and electronic geschftsleben card, all rolled into one. You can leverage your existing social media presence by quietly announcing to certain connections that youre looking for work, or post a general notice on your own profile that youre now accepting freelance clients. Just watch those privacy settings. If youve connected with your boss or the office tattletale on social media, you could inadvertently be announcing your intentions to the wrong person. Job SitesWhen you think of job sites, you probably only think in terms of full-time work. But in fact, most of the major job search sites allow you to search for freelance gigs as well, either by keyword, filter, or category. In addition, there are plenty of sites that cater specifically t o folks looking solely for freelance work. Professional AssociationsMost industries have professional associations its worth it to research the ones in your field, to binnensee if the membership dues come with access to specialized job boards, career advice, education, or other support. To find organizations in your area, start with your best friend Google and dont forget to ask your real friends and colleagues for their recommendations, as well. Know Before You Look for Freelance Jobs If youre looking for extra work on top of your full-time job, you need to take special care that your part-time gig doesnt interfere with your main source of income. It requires a bit of advance planning, even before you start looking for freelance jobs Make Sure Your Employer Doesnt Have a Policy Against MoonlightingIn some cases, you will have signed a legal document prior to starting your job, which specifies whether you can work another job, and what kind of jobs are OK. If youve been at your current job a long time, this might have slipped your mind. Nows a good time to check on your employers policy. (But dont tell HR directly that youre working part-time elsewhere. You might send a glaubenszeugnis you dont intend.) Trade SecretsEven if your boss doesnt care about your working for another company, your employer might have a policy about using the information youve learned in the course of your regular duties to earn extra cash for a competitor. Scheduling IssuesOnce youve figured out that youre legally in the clear to take on extra work, make aya you wont paint yourself into a corner, time-wise, by doing so. If freelancing will make it hard to find time to do your full-time job, its not worth the money. In any case, start small. Dont commit to 20 hours of extra work right off the bat. Take on a few hours of work, or one project for a single client, to get an idea of how youll cope with the extra workload before you commit more time and resources to freelancing. 5 W ays to Find Start-Up Money for Your Freelance Career By using the smarts that will make you a success once youre a full-time freelancer, you can find the funding you need. Its all a matter of rearranging finances and your schedule to reflect your new No. 1 priority being your own boss and making your freelance dreams come true. Heres where to start looking for the money to get started. Cut ExpensesIf youve never made abasic household budget, nows the time to start. Budgeting is not most peoples idea of a good time, but if you want to save money without feeling deprived, the first thing to do is to figure out where your money is going right now, and then make the cuts that will sting the least. Bottom line dont assume that being frugal has to hurt. If you look honestly at your expenditures, youll probably see a few places where you can make some fairly painless cuts. Make More MoneyYou could look for an extrapart-time job, but if your day job is like most, you wont have time to jugg le both and be effective in either. My best advice for someone whos looking for extra money to fund a transition to freelance is to start that switch right now and make a gradual move to full-time, freelance work. By picking up a few gigs here and there, you can determine whether the freelance lifestyle is right for you, as well as figuring out which types of clients and jobs suit you best. And because you wont be committing to another regular job, theres less chance that youll get in trouble with your full-time employer while you bank money. Use a WindfallDid you get a tax refund, or a settlement, or money for an event or milestone? Consider using it as a nest egg to finance your new venture. You can always make a plan to pay yourself back over time if it feels wrong to burn through an unusual influx of cash by switching to freelance. Get a LoanTheres a reason this one appears far down on the list if youre going freelance, and not starting a business with demonstrable cash flow and the potential for a market analysis, youre probably not going to convince a bank to give you asmall business loan. Nor would I necessarily recommend that you hit up friends and family for money, especially before youre sure youll make enough to pay them back in a timely fashion. But if you have other sources of financing, and a growing client base, and need a little extra to make the leap, a small personal loan can get you there that much faster. Just be sure to spell out terms in writing and to fulfill your promises to your benefactor. You dont want there to be any confusion about whos paying whom, and how much, and when. SeveranceIf youre considering freelance in part because youve been laid off or otherwise lost your job, severance can be a great way to finance the next phase in your career. Just be sure that you read the fine print in yourseverance policyso that youll understand exactly how much money you can expect to receive, after taxes, and for how long, and whether healthc are benefits and other perks will be included in your package. If youre receiving or expect to receive unemployment, youll also want to read up on how working for yourself affects youreligibility. While it is often possible to start freelancing part-time while receiving unemployment, youll need to understand the rules in your state to make sure youre adhering to the law when you file. For example, in some states, working a few days a week will reduce, but not suspend, your unemployment check. Check with yourstate unemployment officefor specifics.

How I leveraged an informational interview to land a job

How I leveraged an informational interview to land a jobHow I leveraged an informational interview to land a jobNetworking is something that I didnt value (or even really understand) before I stumbled into my first informational interview. The initial meetingTherbeie welches a woman in one of my first masters classes who was very well spoken, and generally quite impressive. Our class only met once a month, and each time she left an impression on me. Finally, after the last class,I approached her and asked if I could meet her for breakfastto learn what she does for a living.Ill never forget it, we met on a Saturday morning at The Olde House Caf. She told me how she worked in the insurance industry, the finance industry and for the past few years, shes been in the sports apparel industry. She worked for Under Armour in Baltimore, Maryland. As a lifelong athlete, I envisioned a company run by big, sweaty guys not intelligent, sophisticated women.Hearing her story of how she transitioned into different industries and learned from well-seasoned leaders that mentored and coached her along the way was fascinating and encouraging. To my surprise, she asked me a few questions at breakfast, to learn about my background and experiences and asked that I follow up with my resume. I did that, and for the next year and a half, we kept in casual contact. and the follow-upAs I was finishing up my degree,I reached out to her and shared that I was starting the job search. She replied with a job offer (as a temp) for me that eventually parlayed into a full-time position- Ive been living and working in Baltimore ever since.Today, I still utilize informational interviews as a way to make connections in my industry and expand my network. Additionally, I am now on the receiving end of the informational interviews with messages on LinkedIn. In a given month, I receive about 2 inquiries each week. Given my personal experience and success with informational interviews, I do my best to res pond and accept fruchtwein inquiries. Our adviceFrom my own experience requesting an informational interview, Ive found that being brief and specific is the best way to get a positive response when you reach out. The most thoughtful element is explaining what you do or what you are interested in. I like to be prepared for these conversations and when people are generic, it doesnt maximize the time we have to connect. However, Ive gained enough experience to be prepared for most conversations. For example, when an undergraduate student contacts me, and I have a book recommendation for them, I always advise them to utilize their colleges careers office since I did not as a student and wish I would have. In speaking with a colleague in the industry, I have an elevator pitch prepared to summarize my role and either an event or newsletter to subscribe to, that they may find valuable. One aspect that makesinformational interviews a great assetto me is that when I have a meaningful and organi c connection with someone, as a result of an informational interview that I requested I stay in touch with them. Typically, I amrequesting informational interviews with individuals across the countryand sometimes I find myself traveling to the cities where they work but mostly I keep in contact with regular phone calls.Professionally, it has been an asset to me to have contacts at different companies for different projects. Personally, if I were to be searching for a career change, I feel confident my network would be a great resource as a result of these informational interviews. This column was originally published on CareerContessa.com.

These are the 10 places in the U.S. where people live the longest

These are the 10 places in the U.S. where people live the longest These are the 10 places in the U.S. where people live the longest Though plastic surgery, exercise, staying out of the sun and eating certain foods, can help us fend off the appearance of aging for as long as possible, eventually it will come for us. Unless we find some kind of Benjamin Button type machine or make a deal with a witch like Jane Fonda clearly did, we are out of luck. However, there are certain places in this country where people appear to be living longer than others.Realtor.com  released a study of life expectancies in the U.S. and the Top 10 places where people live the longest.  For context, the median lifespan in the U.S. is nearly 79 years old, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The 10 U.S. counties where people tend to live the longest Summit County, Colorado: 86.8 years Billings County, North Dakota: 84 years Marin County, California: 83.8 years Fairfax County, Virginia: 83.7 years Aleutians East Borough, Alaska: 83.7 years Presidio County, Texas:  83.7 years San Juan County, Washington: 83.7 years Los Alamos County, New Mexico: 83.5 years Teton County, Wyoming: 83.5 years Collier County, Florida: 83.4 years Know thy neighbor, know thy selfThe research team analyzed why these locations were propelling longer lifespans.“If you want to live a long time, the best thing you can do is move to a place where people are verifiably living the longest,”  Dan Buettner, founder of Blue Zones, an initiative that works with communities to help set up wellness policies to increase the lifespan of residents told Realtor.com.According to Buettner, your lifespan can really depend on what your neighbor is doing. If everyone in your community does healthy, outdoorsy activities on the weekends (like they definitely do in Summit County, Colorado) then you will too. But if they are just going to Burger King and then binge-watching Netflix, so will you.It isn’t surprising that many of the counties that made the list are in very affluent areas. The median home list price in Marin County is $1,425,400.

The Best Use of Fonts in Your Resume

The Best Use of Fonts in Your Resume The Best Use of Fonts in Your Resume The resume font  size and  style  you use to write your resume make a big difference. As employers have so many resumes to look through they scan them in seconds. First impressions are all important. If theres something they dont like about a resume, such as an inappropriate or difficult-to-read font, it will be dismissed.Employers are more interested in what your resume says  than  the style its written in. For this reason, readability and clarity need to be the two most important concerns when deciding on the best  resume font to use and in what size.Nowadays, you dont know how an employer will look at your resume. Its important to consider how a resume font looks on paper, on a monitor, as well as on a phone or tablet. Many candidates use an online resume builder  to produce attractive resumes which grab the attention of employers. Here is a complete guide to resume typography. It  explores the best fonts for a resume, the ideal font size, as well as other ways to visually improve your resume.Which fonts are best for resumes? The best fonts to use for resumes are clear and simple. Not only to make it easy-to-read for prospective employers, but also for ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems). ATS are the systems employers use to filter out candidates. They narrow down the selection until there is a more manageable number to be manually read. They, like people, favor readable resumes. The worst resume fonts are the ones that try to be fun, wacky, weird, or silly. Not only do they give entirely the wrong impression of being unprofessional and sometimes childish, they also tend to be unclear. You may feel like fonts such as Comic Sans, Courier, and Gothic fonts may give your  resume a touch of personality. Dont do it.The two most common resume fonts  are Arial and Times New Roman. They are both clear, readable, perfectly good choices which are better than the vast majority. An employer is unlikely to judge you harshly for using them. However, they will make your resume l ook similar to other peoples. There are a number of alternative resume fonts which are just as readable as Arial or Times New Roman but show that you have put some thought into choosing your resume font. Fonts such as Calibri, Avenir, Gill Sans, Verdana, and Cambria are all great options which will give your resume a fresher feel.Which resume font size to use?Dont make the mistake of shrinking down the resume font size so you can squeeze as many words in as possible. Employers dont want to work hard  to read your resume and the last thing you want to do is make them squintOn the other hand, space on your resume is precious as ideally it should be kept to one page. A large resume font size will make it seem like you have nothing to say.The best resume font size  is 11 for the main body of the text (certainly no bigger than 12). The main page header (where your name is) should be much larger, around 22-24. The subheadings of each section should be roughly 14.Resume format: It is always a good idea to send your resume in PDF format. In other formats, such as a Word document, the computer or device of the recipient automatically changes the font. This can completely change the documents appearance. As fonts differ in the amount of space the characters take up, it can end up looking messy.Other resume typography and design tipsTry to avoid long wordy chunks of text as they are off-putting for employers. They simply dont want to wade through wordy paragraphs. Use visual aids such as headings, bullet points, columns, and bold, to break down the text into more digestible pieces. Read this guide on how to write a resume for more tips.Whichever font and font size you use for your resume and however you format it, make sure the style is consistent throughout. If the font size, line spacing, margin size, or anything else isnt uniform it looks sloppy and suggests you lack attention to detail. What are the best colors for your resume? You can use color sparingly one your resu me to strategically highlight important parts of your resume and to make it look more attractive. Use a simple color scheme and avoid using inappropriate colors.Using resume templates  is the most time-effective way of ensuring that your resume is easy-on-the eye. They have been professionally designed and there are industry-specific templates which are quick and easy to edit.Designing a resume which stands out can be difficult for those without design skills and it can be time-consuming. Professional resume templates allow you to spend less working on your resume, and more time applying for jobs.

Top mistakes people make at work that hurt their productivity

Top mistakes people make at work that hurt their productivity Top mistakes people make at work that hurt their productivity There’s one big mistake people make all the time: Working too many hours As I report in Great at Work  in a 2009 survey by Harvard Business School Professor Leslie Perlow and research associate Jessica Porter, 94% of the 1,000 professionals surveyed worked 50 hours or more a week, and a staggering 50 percent of them said they worked more than 65 hours a week. In a study of high earners, management writer Sylvia Ann Hewlett found that a full 35 percent worked more than 60 hours a week, and 10 percent worked more than 80 hours a week. Working all of these very long hours only makes sense if it leads to better performance. But as I’ve experienced first-hand, it doesn’t. Early in my career, when I worked at the Boston Consulting Group, I put in 60, 70, 80, 90-hour weeks in an effort to make my mark. One day, I confronted an uncomfortable truth: A colleague of mine was getting better results than I was. Her analysis was crisper and more compelling. Yet one evening in the office, when I went to look for her, she wasn’t there. I asked a guy sitting near her desk where she was, and he replied that she’d gone home for the night. He explained that she never worked late. She worked from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. No nights. No weekends. This colleague was on to something. As my research has shown, performance doesn’t increase in a linear fashion with hours worked. Consider this chart. I analyzed the relationship between weekly hours worked and performance among 5,000 managers and employees in my study. Working longer hours enhances performance, but only up to a point. If you work between 30 and 50 hours per week, adding more hours on the job lifts your performance. But once you’re working between 50 and 65 hours per week, the benefit of adding additional hours drops off. And if you’re working 65 hours or more, overall performance declines as you pile on the hours. (Note: these are averages across jobs and industries. The actual numbers may be different in your job, but consider that the shape is similar). Other research has documented the same inverted “U.” Studying factory workers at a weaponry plant in Britain in 1914, Stanford economist  John Pencavel found that  performance topped out at 64 to 67 hours per week, beyond which it began to fall. Consider his chart shown below, and notice how similar it is to mine, even those these are very different data sets. Think about the profound implication of these findings:  the whole entire premise of the world’s work ethic- that harder work equates better results - is basically wrong.  Yes, you need to work  hard  (about 50 hours per week in my dataset), but that’s completely different from saying you need to work  harder  than others to rise to the top. What’s the implication for all of us? Are you working the right number of hours in the week? Too many, or too few? You should actually determine a number in your mind: “the optimal average number of hours per week to work for me is ___ .” Mine is 50. Then comes the most important question of all: how can I spend those hours of work better? As the top performers in our study showed,  it’s how they work - and not how much they work - that counted the most to boost job performance. Morten T. Hansen  is a management professor at University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of  Great At Work: How Top Performers Achieve Less, Work Better and Achieve More. QA Engineer Job and Salary

QA Engineer Job and Salary QA Engineer Job and Salary Large manufacturing companies and the military - groups at the forefront of the computer revolution - pioneered the QA engineer job. So, it is no surprise that software development and quality engineering are closely linked. The software quality assurance engineer (QA engineer) has become a critical component of the software development process. But how has the role evolved? From CMMI to agile In the last 20 years, the manufacturing world has been moving toward “lean” methodologies (such as those pioneered at Toyota) that help to streamline product development processes. QA engineers previously worked with software developers who used Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) and other “waterfall” development techniques, but in the past 15 years many have replaced them with “Agile” methods. Agile techniques and tools have taken the software development industry - and the role of the QA engineer - by storm since the writing of the Agile Manifesto in 2001. Instead of having a big chunk of the development process labeled “testing,” where developers throw code over the fence and into the QA process, QA engineers now work closely with programmers to produce high-quality code quickly while incorporating feedback from customers along the way. The end result is that development teams and the rest of the IT organization have been gelling into “DevOps,” with the QA engineer a key part of that transformation. From single to multiple platforms Originally, applications were developed for only one or two platforms. But today’s applications will often have a server component with an application program interface (API) which is, in turn, used by mobile, web and desktop applications. Each of those client applications will likely span multiple platforms such as iOS and Android for mobile, or Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox for web applications. This means even a simple application can have five or more different platforms to be tested, requiring the QA engineer to bring specialized knowledge on all fronts. Is it any wonder that there is strong demand for quality assurance engineers in the current job market? From manual to automated testing When the Web first hit the scene it was hard to imagine that the non-interactive pages of the first version of HTML would evolve to become full-fledged word processors, spreadsheets or photo editors within two decades. Not only are these applications sophisticated, but they also have a lot of code written in languages like JavaScript, Python and Ruby. This creates added testing requirements for the QA engineer because there is no compilation step to check syntactical correctness. To keep up, the QA engineer of today uses a wide range of automated tools such as LoadRunner and Selenium to put applications through their paces. Because some of these tools have unique purposes such as unit testing, load testing or regression testing, today’s QA engineers need specialized knowledge to use each of these tools, including the ability to write scripts. Today’s skills requirements and salary expectations In the past, QA engineers performed most or all of their work manually, which was doable since there were a limited number of devices actually needing to be tested. Modern QA engineers spend much of their time working with automated tools to cover the wide variety of devices that can be used. While mobile and web applications have provided end users with benefits such as the ability to use applications on the go or without complex configuration, they have significantly increased both the need for and the difficulty of the work that the QA engineer must do. Skills: QA engineer (manual): Manual QA engineers define the scope and objectives of various levels of QA testing. They also write and maintain test automation, publish test results, develop quality assurance standards, and define and track quality assurance metrics. Manual quality assurance engineers should be highly knowledgeable in quality assurance principles and procedures and able to define, write and maintain test automation. He or she must have effective communication skills to translate technical processes and analytic techniques to solve problems, and be familiar with the materials used to build a product. QA engineer (automated): Automated quality assurance engineers develop and execute automated testing suites. They also lead quality assurance efforts within a software development group and work closely with development teams and stakeholders performing QA activities. These professionals lead QA efforts through defining, developing, executing and documenting automated test plans and cases. Employers look for extensive knowledge in at least one automated testing framework. Salary: The midpoint salary for a QA engineer (manual) is $71,500, according to the 2019 Robert Half Technology Salary Guide, depending on factors such as experience, industry, local market demand, specialized skills and company reputation. The midpoint salary for a QA engineer (automated) is $84,000, according to the Salary Guide, depending on factors such as experience, industry, local market demand, specialized skills and company reputation. Check out the 2019 Robert Half Technology Salary Guide for more details on salaries and other IT trends. This post has been updated to reflect more current information.

5 ways to get ahead in your job search before you even start

5 ways to get ahead in your job search â€" before you even start 5 ways to get ahead in your job search â€" before you even start If you were to jump ship at work tomorrow, how prepared would you be to start up your job search again? Here’s what to have ready - before the time comes.Make sure your resume is updatedIt’s so easy to sit back and let your resume gather dust in a file on your computer, but if you never look at it, you’ll never update it.The process can take a while, so you might as well take some of your free time to add to it (and cut out things that no longer apply) before push really comes to shove. You won’t gain anything from waiting until the very last minute.Check on your websiteYou might not look at your professional website multiple times a week, but as long as the pages are updated, that’s all that counts - you never know if potential recruiters and/or managers are looking at it.So if you have a bunch of pages on your site, detailing things like your experience, portfolio and blog posts, make sure all the content is relevant to who you are now. This also goes for any headshots y ou have on your website - you don’t want to look like you’re several years younger than you are currently, with much less experience.Have a good relationship with your managerYou don’t want to be on your manager’s bad side, after all, you never know when you might need them to refer you for a future position. So keep getting out of your comfort zone at work and  staying clear about expectations  - just like you would if you recently got a promotion. This will make things that much easier when you have to look a for a new position.Have other potential references readyMake sure you stay in contact with potential references from previous positions. There’s almost nothing harder than rekindling relationships with people you used to work with long, long ago.So instead of having to start all over again and hash your professional life out in a long email, stay in contact with your contacts periodically. How Do You Handle the Salary Question

How Do You Handle the Salary Question The Salary Question How Do You Handle the Salary Question Penelope Trunk has a nice post this week on her Brazen Careerist blog on a difficult issue all job interviewees face: Discussing your potential salary, should you take the job. Her basic message, which I agree with, is to stand your ground and avoid being the first to offer a figure. I cant help but agree, and offer the following additional techniques for handling this question from potential employers. Early in the interview process, interviewers have little knowledge of a candidates experience and talents. Candidates want to delay stating a salary number until the company has a strong interest in making an offer. Giving a salary number too early in the process can only hurt an applicants chances. So, here are some techniques for responding to the salary question. 1) First, say you would rather not give them a specific number; Second, communicate that youre interested in the position, and; Third, tell them that all you'd like them to do is make you the best offer they feel comfortable with. Putting it all together, it can sound like this: Regarding salary, I'd rather not give you a specific number right now. I'm very interested in this position, and I expect that you'll make me the best offer you're comfortable with at the right time. 2) Say that youre happy to discuss salary at a time when there is strong interest in your background. It could sound like this: I'd be happy to discuss my salary expectations after we have both decided that there is strong mutual interest in possibly hiring me. 3) Ask them what the salary range is for the position. When they give you the salary range, you can say that your salary expectations are in line with the higher end of the range, assuming this is true. 4) State the following: When considering a position, several factors are important to me. Salary is only one factor, but not the most important. More important factors include quality of the position, growth opportunities, quality of the people I work with, company culture, and location. 5) If youre faced with a question such as, What's your current salary?, answer this way: Say, I am (was) paid well and in line with job market conditions. Communicate that you'd be happy to discuss your specific salary later in the hiring process. State that you can also provide salary verification documentation. Say you're interested in the opportunity and you'd like them to make the best offer they're comfortable with. Putting it all together, itcan sound like this: Interviewer:What is your current (most recent) salary? You: Regarding my most recent salary, I was compensated very well and in line with job market conditions. I'd welcome the chance to discuss my compensation later in the process when we've decided I'm the right person for this opportunity. I'd also welcome the chance to provide salary verification. When we've decided Im the right person for the job, Id like you to make the best offer you're comfortable with. Remember, as Penelope states in her post, the first person to give a number is at a disadvantage. You want to discuss salary only when the hiring manager is absolutely convinced the company can't live without you. It is at this point when you have negotiating leverage, but not until then. Craft a response that feels comfortable for you and practice saying it.

How to Talk to Your Boss About Your Mental Health - The Muse

How to Talk to Your Boss About Your Mental Health - The Muse How to Talk to Your Boss About Your Mental Health A close friend of mine suffers from panic attacks. While he generally knows how to keep them at bay, they’re sometimes unpreventable. Before a recent business trip when he’d been experiencing a particularly difficult time in his life, making the anxiety even worse, he began to fear getting on the plane (with his company’s COO, nonetheless). I encouraged him to be candid with his boss and with his traveling companion. It took some cajoling on my part, but eventually, my friend realized that he needed to be straightforward with his manager about his situation or risk something far worse. This got me thinking though. Sure, it was easy enough for me to instruct him to reveal this hugely personal part of himself, but I wasn’t the one who had to face these people at work every day. Once you admit that you struggle with anxiety, depression, ADHD, or bipolar disorder, are you just putting a scarlet-like letter on yourself? Are you setting yourself up for failure read in the form of not getting the big project or the promotion? Of course, being discriminated against because of any kind of mental health issue is illegal (more on this below), but that doesn’t mean that your concerns with opening up about them aren’t valid. I trusted that Muse Coach and Licensed Social Worker, Melody Wilding, would know far more than me how to proceed, even though I don’t think the advice I gave my friend in his time of need was wrong. His flight was postponed by a full day, giving him more time to prepare for the departure (time he used to visit his psychiatrist, in fact). He reported that his COO was glad he’d been honest, explaining that he’s familiar with anxiety disorder, having a family member who faces a similar challenge. The trip ended up going off without a hitch; if there had been any issues though, at least the COO wouldn’t have been shell-shocked. Understand Where You Are There’s something about being prepared that often adds a level of security to things. And yet, I asked Wilding, at what point do you reveal this information to your boss? During the interview? Once you have a job offer? As I half-suspected, Wilding tells me that there is no “single ‘right’ answer.” What you decide to do varies “depending on the individual’s conditions, symptoms, and comfort level in addition to the dynamics and culture of the workplace.” It stands to reason that because mental health issues are such delicate ones, “disclosure is a very personal decision,” explains Wilding. If you’re getting by OK, and your work isn’t suffering, you may not feel comfortable making a big announcement that essentially reveals your medical history. But, if the state of your mental health is starting to interfere with your work and your ability to, well, do your job, Wilding says you’ll want to speak with your boss, “especially if you’re in need of accommodations or are going to need time off.” If you simply go in asking for time off due to a personal issue or emergency, know that you may be asked about the nature of your condition, by which point, you’ll probably have to disclose more information, though this doesn’t mean you have to read your medical chart to anyone. Find an Appropriate Time If your relationship with your boss is good, if you communicate often, and if you trust him or her, sharing some details of your situation will likely be a lot easier than if the workplace culture is a challenging, stiff one where it’s all work and no play, not ever. This is when scripting what you’re going to say and being ready with a list of things you’ve been excelling at can come in extra handy. If you and your boss have poor communication, you might consider paying a visit to the HR department first. Oftentimes, these individuals are better trained and equipped to assist in these complicated areas. While most people probably won’t choose to disclose any details during the hiring process, if your issue is one that you struggle to keep under control, waiting until you get the offer and sign on the dotted line, after which you begin working and drop the ball on a major assignment solely due to your condition, probably isn’t your best bet. Instead, Wilding says, “you may need to be very up front and disclose during the interview process.” You’ll want to frame it, and put it in context, so that’s not the thing the interviewer is remembering about you. If you’re a part of a support group, it can be a good idea to speak to others about how they’ve approached this delicate situation. Many of us have felt over-tired, over-worked, just flat-out exhausted. You may even be familiar with burnout. Maybe you immediately took a personal day or submitted a vacation request. Perhaps you approached your boss about your workload or figured out a way to finally start delegating some of your tasks. Whatever you felt like during that crazy, busy work period can’t compare to a serious, depressive episode. And if you’ve been diagnosed with depression, a few days off from work aren’t likely to whip you back in shape. You should be talking to your doctor or a trusted medical professional, but you should also plan to have a conversation with your manager. Wilding says, however, that if you’re “in the thick of a depressive episode, for example, it might be best to wait until you’re in a better place so you have the energy and can appropriately bring yourself to have the best conversation with your employer.” Maintain Your Privacy Regardless of the conversation you have with your boss, you need only reveal as much as you’re comfortable with. You do not need to go into a lengthy explanation of your family’s history with bipolar disorder, nor do you need to give a run-down of all of your panic attacks. For example, if you have ADHD but this isn’t something you want to state as such, you might consider telling your supervisor that “you have issues with concentration that affect your ability to work,” Wilding says. It’s also appropriate to reveal that you have a medical issue or condition without actually mentioning your diagnosis by name, Wilding elaborates. Although you may feel embarrassed by your mental health issues as my friend certainly was, you are far from alone. Wilding believes that as a culture we’re (slowly) approaching a greater acceptance of such issues. We’re having more conversations and understanding that the open dialogue around mental health and well being can be healing in and of itself. One way of speaking to your employer about your situation may be to “reframe the situation as an opportunity,” suggests Wilding. You do this by regularly sharing your strengths, working with your team to create an “optimal working situation,” and being as productive as possible when all is well. And, of course, if you’re not already, you should be working with a licensed mental health professional. This person is trained to help you develop coping skills, process your worries and concerns, Wilding explains. He or she may even offer to role play with you so that you’re confident and prepared before you sit your boss down to tell him what’s been going on and what he can anticipate based on what you’re sharing. Know the Law Above all, as awkward as the discussion may feel, go into it knowing that you are protected. The Americans with Disabilities Act, which your HR department should be familiar with, “prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities in employment…” The act further stipulates that “Anyone known to have a history of mental disorders can be considered disabled.” That means you have rights and shouldn’t be worried that your employer will act against you simply because you open up about what’s happening. Because the law allows for qualified people to be accommodated to a reasonable extent, Wilding points out that, depending on the nature of the impairment, a person may be eligible for accommodations such as a flexible schedule or work from home privileges.” Better than assuming a couple of personal days will get you where you need to be, you might consider chatting with your boss about flex hours or remote working schedule that’s not determined in advance but rather is decided when you need it most. If and when you do decide to disclose, the information you reveal will be kept confidential. Since overall well being and mental health issues aren’t as hidden as they once were, any companies, in fact, have resources for which you can locate behavioral health services, again, if you aren’t already seeing someone. While I know it is easier said than done, you really shouldn’t be ashamed of your mental health issues or let them prevent you from going after the job you want or the career you deserve. Editor’s Note: This article is for general informational purposes only. It is not medical advice and should not be used to make a diagnosis or treat a condition. If your mental health is suffering, please consult with a medical specialist.
